How to Select the Best School Backpacks

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

As parents we try to prepare our children for as much as possible in life, but this is a hard challenge.  We are more likely to achieve our big challenges if we do not have too many little issues to distract us.  Childrens clothes and accessories need to be practical.  We need children to learn, but when it comes to getting out of the door in the morning we need to know that they can quickly put on their shoes, coats, hats and bags without a major trauma.

So what do the best school backpacks have which the others don’t?
The best school backpacks need to be practical, comfortable, indestructible, always in fashion, carry everything and never get to heavy!  Unfortunately this cannot be realized until the tardis becomes a scientific reality and a gravitation free zone can surround the backpack.  While we are waiting for this to happen there are other important factors to consider.

The size of the best school backpacks
Some children will decide that everything should go to school with them.  In a perfect world we would have time in the morning to check that nothing unsuitable was in their school bag, however, with three minuets to leaving time this is not always practical.  If your backpack is too large a child may just fill all the available space.Equally, you do not want every precious piece of artwork and homework crinkled as it is forced into a bag which is too small.  If you get a backpack which is just a little bigger than the main book or folder used you will probably be OK.If one day the item does not fit in, it is time for a clear out, or at least a check to ascertain what is hiding in the bottom and taking up precious inches.

The design of the best school backpacks
A school backpack must be comfortable. If it is uncomfortable you will have a whining child and you will unavoidably end up carrying the bag yourself.  The straps should be adjustable and wide to stop them digging in.There should be a separate compartment for lunch boxes.  This will stop the food getting squashed and the work getting covered in food or a leaking drink bottle.  The backpack should be water proof, or at least splash proof for the winter months, while it should still be manageable in the summer warmth.

The look for the best school backpack
There will always be a fashion element of a school backpack.  There are several things to consider before you decide to go out and buy a backpack covered in the latest craze.  Firstly, anything which is seriously ‘in fashion’ can also quickly become seriously out of fashion!  It is amazing how fashionable a simple single coloured backpack can become with a few well chosen key rings and stickers.

Finally, your child must like the backpack or you have lost before you even started.  If they are not sure about it, take them to look at the accessories which could go with it.  Look at the stickers, ribbons and keyrings which can be used to decorate the backpack you may find that they start to see things differently.

Consumer Products Safety Commission on the safety issues on children products

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) was created in 1972 and for more than 30 years, it has taken the responsibility of protecting consumers against risks of injuries resulting from the usage of unsafe products. In addition, Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) was signed into the United States law to further strengthen the safety measures required in consumer products.

Most recently, through the law, the Commission has aimed to further reduce children’s exposure to lead. The resultant destruction that lead poisoning causes includes brain damage, kidney problems and may even be fatal. Towards the end of the 1970s, the problem was so serious, that there were millions of children in the United States with elevated blood lead levels that were seen harmful to their health!

The CPSC noticed the severity of the situation and have decided that any children product that consists more than 600 parts per million (ppm) of lead in any part of an accessible product would be seen as dangerous. Which means that any children’s product from toys to baby nursery bedding which contains more than 600ppm would be dangerous for children under the CPSIA.

The CPSC has also defined that any individual younger than or at 12 years of age would be seen as children under the law and all products that were made with the intention of selling mainly to the these group of children will have to comply to it.

This law also applies to all baby nursery bedding, nursery decoration, toys and children’s products that were manufactured before the date of the law that was implemented. Besides the CPSC requires all goods that were manufactured after 90 days since the establishment of the rule to be tested by an accredited third party. This is to ensure that the manufacturers adhere to the safety regulations that the Commission has implemented.

In addition, they have shown their determination in making all products extremely safe for use by intending to drop the limits to 300ppm in August and further reduce it again in 2011 to a level which is seen reasonable according to the technology available by then. However, with the rapid advancement of technology, all toys and baby nursery bedding might contain only traces of lead and would be extremely safe for use in the near future.

Baby Activites from Birth to 3 Months

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

Most parents believe there are not many baby activities you can do with your infant up to 3 months old.  This is not entirely true and the purpose of this article is provide some baby activities and suggestions during this time period.

Your baby can hear, see, taste, smell and feel from birth but his senses will not develop fully until around 6 months of age. That said, you can still enjoy several games or activities with your infant during this period. While many of these activities may seem basic or only for enjoyment, they all have a goal to help your baby develop.

Disappearing Toy – Find a small object or toy that your baby can easily spot.  Have your spouse hold your baby or secure your baby in a seat. Show your baby the toy, then hide it behind your back asking “Where did it go?”. Pop it back out (not too fast so the baby is startled) with a “It’s Here!” Initially, it is better to be predictable so your baby can anticipate the toy’s reappearance.  This activity will start building your baby’s memory and cognitive skills.

Pat a Cake – Lie your baby down on a soft flat surface such as the bed or blanket on the carpet. Start singing the Pat a Cake song and lightly tap your baby’s palms. When your baby gets to be older than 3 months, you can progress to light clapping!  This is a nice activity for language and coordination.

Imitation Game – Hold your baby closely or lie him down on a soft flat surface. Be sure to be close enough (8-12 inches) so that he can see you, especially for infants. Now, start with small motions, like a large smile or a tongue waggle. You may get lucky and your baby will try copying you! As your baby gets older, you can try larger body movements with your head or hands and arms. This game will strengthen emotional bond with your baby as well has help him with movement coordination.

While we do not cover it specifically here, the tummy time baby activity is also a very important for infants.  There are many other baby games and activities you can share with your infant during the 0 to 3 month age period but we hope you give these three a try.  Some of the best and fun baby activites are the most simple.  Above all, make sure you have fun!
